Superpowered Watermelon Slushies

The dog days of summer are here. It is official!
The 2012 June solstice took place on Wednesday, June 20, at 23:09 Universal Time, or 6:09 p.m. Central Daylight Time. What are you doing to celebrate our first FULL day of summer? Here at the Dog House we’re sharing our favorite summer recipes.
Let’s pop open a watermelon.
Huh? Earlier this month I realized that watermelon slushies have a wonderful texture. Have you ever tried to crush ice for drinks using a traditional blender? It is a hassle. Something about the way the fruit freezes is awesomely smooth. It is perfect for making cool summer drinks!
3 ways you can experiment with watermelon slushies:
Get the basic recipe here and some additional prep instructions here. Use the watermelon slushie as your starting point.
- Watermelon Vodka Slush from AllRecipes.com
What I love about AllRecipes is that people are constantly trying variations. Be sure to read through the comments! - Watermelon Punch from yummy supper
Y’all know I love my Blueberry Mojitos so of course the fresh lime and mint in this recipe caught my attention. Why yes, thank you—I will take the rum. - Watermelon Margarita from the Food Network
I am not sure why this recipe being shared by Brian Boitano makes me laugh, but it does. Apparently I am out of the loop. I didn’t realize the skating star had culinary talent. That being said, I cannot wait to try chili powder in my next experimental batch of slushies! What an interesting ingredient.
The best part of experimenting with watermelon slushies? This tip from the FoodNetwork:
Bring the frozen watermelon on your picnic (it’ll double as an extra ice pack) and let thaw slightly, then mash with a fork and spoon into cups. Perfect!
If you have any other delicious summer recipe suggestions to try I’d love to hear them! Let’s chat in the comments.
